Cuffed

Daweti Yathitha 2006 (Mthatha)

They say I must choose
I should stop trying to fill up men's shoes
I am a woman
But can't I be a man?
Is that really who I am?
Maybe I am confused;
Maybe it's a passing phase
People decide on their own,
That I, am confused

In this body I feel trapped.
I am cuffed.
I wish I could unleash myself,
The inner me behind the musk
Is it a must;
For me to choose
Can't I be both?
But when I see a woman I ablaze
And when I see a Mani crave
In this body I am trapped
Or is it a demon within me?

I have become more than sure
That my life as a man I will endure
And I am more than secure
I can fall in love with my hearts core
There is nothing else my heart wants more

I will no longer live a life of waste
Or a life of haste
I have come to the realisation
That I, am my only obligation

It was the words that they didn't say
That made me part of this day
I am proud to be this way.

About this poem

This poem is about coming out and revealing your sexuality in a not so welcoming environment filled with unwanted judgements and unwarranted opinion by the homophobic people. This poem focuses more on the trauma that the victim experiences due to all this , and finds it difficult to accept and fit in as herself.
