The fall

We both swam too deep in the ocean that stands between us,
There’s a quiet comfort in the moments before you drown.
Lifelines and air lines broken like a lovers trust,
Out in the dark no one can hear you make a sound.
Break through the surface of the water,
Reach your arms up panicking and grasping at the sky.
I always wanted to pull out this poison left by my father,
I’m breathing but gasping and begging to die.

We both flew too high and to close to the sun,
Just like Icarus pride comes before a fall.
As your mind wanders and your thoughts run,
You wonder if anyone will answer your call.
There’s a maddening excitement when you burn,
When you are finally able to let it all turn to ash.
This is a lesson that I fear we will never learn,
Love ignites so quick but is gone in a flash.
I always wanted to stay here in this sunset,
And see the color of it in your eyes.
Now we’ll be just a memory that I forget,
And your face a dream that disappears at sunrise.

We both looked for too long in the stars,
Hoping there would be somewhere for us to hide
Now the thought of forever is so far,
I wish I could go back to place before you cried.
Your touch on my skin is seared into my brain,
Our lips so close but destined not to meet.
There’s a relief that’s trapped in the pain,
And a taste of what could’ve been that’s bittersweet.
I see you in every work of fiction,
Your face in every person who walks down the street.
You are my beautiful but deadly addiction,
My final test I’m taking that I can’t cheat.

We both dug for too long in this dirt,
We used all our strength to build our house on the sand.
There’s an exquisite pleasure that comes from the hurt,
A whisper of a promise that is impossible to withstand.
Our flaws build us our very own prison,
Our insecurity’s make us put up a wall.
I know as you finally fade from my vision,
That I’ll smile one last time before the fall.
