Masks

She was a young girl, full of dreams and ideas
But then things happened, and life filled her with fears

She thought people were genuine, honest and true
But as the light was shone, she knew, she knew

These people wear masks, are not genuine, not true
They don’t care for others, they don’t care for you

She was a teen girl, still hopeful, still strong
But she could still see it in the world, all of the wrong

She tried to take the pressure, she tried to do her best
But the wrong weighed her down and all she wanted to do was rest

Innocence and youth lost, taken by the masks
No one can know, we must bury it in the past

She tried to carry on with a false smile, trying not to go round the bend
We need to escape this somehow, say hello to my new chemical friend

Finally some relief, safe and sound in this bubble
But she knew in the end it would only bring trouble

She fought with all her might and said goodbye to her only friend
After all, it was what was best in the end

She was a young woman, no friend, no family, no home of her own
Sharing this strange place with masks that are still not gone

Days go by while she wonders what will be,
When will she be away from these masks, when will she be free

Then the day came when she finally got a place
Somewhere to call her own, somewhere safe

Life started anew, everything seemed to be going fine
Summer nights with new friends, chatting and drinking wine

Deep down she knew they would come again those masks
Always knew that it could never ever last

Every time they came they stole another piece
Having their fun, their cake, their feast

She’d spent her whole life being someone else’s toy
But was at least  blessed with some bundles of joy

Of course she knew that this joy would not last
And here they come again, the masks, the masks

She fought and fought but had no chance to win
The masks were too great and the truth tellers too thin

The battle is lost along with her mind
Still she tries to pretend that everything is fine

But time has taken its toll and the weight of the task
She’s no longer able to smile and hold up her own mask

She retreats from the world, goes into her shell
She’s away from the masks, but is still living in hell

Dreaming of a day she might be happy and free
But knowing deep down that it will never be

All she can hope for is the day to come,
That day of eternal rest, when everything will finally be done
