Karma

The screams of my mother,
Her groans from pain,
Haunted my nights, and now my days.
You didn’t hold the umbrella over my head,
But you let me drench.

When heroes burn villages,
Raze the forests and dreams,
What was a little girl to do
But cry to God and pray?

The cowboy slaughtered the sheeps
Then burnt the sheds
The heat licks my soul still
I'd rather be cold.

Mourned you more times than I have fingers in my hands,
Now I wish for freedom,
Now I wish for your death.

Your damaged vessel leaked all the love you’ve got,
Aggression is your only weapon,
So you’ve lost your lot.
Karma will haunt you, your siblings and mater,
I was you staunch supporter, now I'm a vocal hater.

Glistening diamonds down my mother's cheeks
Cut the tampered glass covering my heart,
Now I see healers once every moon,
Forceful is my hiraeth to my childhood to change her life path.

She still cries rivers, oceans and seas,
But I know we'll make it to the other side,
On the beach, relishing the warm, salty breeze.

About this poem

This is a reflective piece that I wrote directly addressing a parental figure in my life. Through this poem, I'm telling him how his lack of empathy destroyed parts of us, as well as our family. Having said that, the piece ends with a hopeful note and gives a sense of newfound strength.
