Homeless Noel
Douglas Blair 1951 (London)
He had found heat
In the alcove of the store.
Early sunset
Hardly visible
Through all the clouds.
Made for a COLDER START.
But he was tough
Survival was his vocation.
Sometimes the cart pushed.
Sometimes the backpack
Two sets of clothes.
Right now...wet socks on.
YUKK.
In front of City Hall
Piped music.
Some energetic skaters
All smiles.
He smiled too
Remembering
Earlier years with Dad.
(Before Afghanistan.
And the telegram.)
Yes, Ted was smiling.
God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen
Let Nothing You Dismay.
Nothing?
Was that possible?
Right then clouds
Opened wide.
Three quarters Moon
Observed, and almost smiling.
Smiling down, wintering.
God saw, he guessed.
Saw and undertook.
In a look.
Silent Night sounds
Arresting. Comforting.
Jesus, Baby Jesus.
Innocence
Without denial.
Answers forthcoming.
About this poem
thinking of those on the streets with their jam packed grocery carts. Especially Christmas time.
