On the Road to Nowhere

Amarachi Ogbonnaya 1995 (Enugu State)

On the Road to Nowhere,

I was on that road, not having a destination
The heart was optimistic, I rode with him
Go wherever your heart leads they say
Not sure if my heart led me but I felt nothing,
My heart was empty guess it was desperation

On the road to nowhere,
I saw no butterflies,
Birds did not sing, not even an owl
just a bare ground yielding no fruit
All the seeds I poured dried and withered
Guess the road was barren.

Now I am on the road no more,
Strangely I feel the happiness
Nothing to fear, nothing to worry,
Alone is peace, alone is happiness,
This moment, I must cherish.

About this poem

The poem is about a young lady who decided to fall in love because everyone reminded her of her singleness and loneliness. Her effort to love the person proved abortive and she ended the relationship. She has come to appreciate her loneliness.
