Winter

Miranda Ridenour 1985 (Modesto)

The fallen leaves show first signs of fall.
The breeze is chilled with winter coming
The sky is dark with clouds.
All the birds have flown south
The silent howling of the angry sky
Let's us know a storm is brewing nearby.
The sun has faded, the flowers have died
The side of the mountain is no longer bright.
Time to get the fires going , sip hot chocolate, and stay warm through this
Cold night winter storm.

I absolutely enjoyed reading your poem! Your piece evoked a vivid image of winter that was both beautiful and somewhat austere. Your word usage is impactful and you demonstrate a wonderful talent for using ambient language- phrases like "the silent howling of the angry sky" and "time to get the fires going, sip hot chocolate, and stay warm" really pull the reader into your poem’s winter landscape.

I have a few suggestions that could possibly enhance your already captivating work. The first pertains to the structure. Try experimenting with your formatting and stanza length. Breaking your poem into shorter stanzas, or perhaps including a couplet or tercet, might help emphasize the key points and make the appearance of the poem more engaging.

Secondly, you did a fantastic job of creating a somber environment. However, ending your poem on a similarly subdued note might not be as engaging for some readers. Consider introducing a subtle shift in tone, or presenting a 'silver lining' towards the end. For instance, you might express the comfort and coziness of being indoors during a storm, highlighting the intimacy brought about by inclement weather.

Overall, these are very minor points in relation to a piece that is already quite enjoyable and visually evocative. Keep up the great work, and keep writing beautiful poetry like this!
