Let us instead write about moving forward
As a plane through unexpected turbulence
As a hound tromps through a door frame
As a toddler’s sticky hands seize wonder
Let us instead write about moving on
As summer embraces greater vibrancy
As painted leaves adorn themselves with glass
As frost forgets its bitterness, melting to green
Let us capture laughter and springtime
For it shall become light again
And the sun is just as bright as before
It was shrouded by grief
Let us bask in hope and beginnings
When regrets fade like afternoon shadows
And the night is no longer burdensome
Because tomorrow will dawn
About this poem
This poem captures a climax that is my twenty-fifth year. I had just lived what was perhaps the best and worst summer of my life in which jocund adventure and the darkness of loss melded. It was the summer of an exotic fairytale romance complete with dancing around fountains, overnight canoeing and wrangling an Emu. It was also the summer I unexpectedly lost my grandmother. Serendipity brought me to a summer camp, lending vibrant friendships that swiftly faded and dispersed. It was a summer of multiple beginnings and ends, and beginnings and ends all over. The dichotomy of experiences caused me to question and process why I am the way that I am and how I had spent each year up until that summer.
