SPURN

the fact is we worried and broke, quest misunderstood and corrupt
we fought and stabbed, the blood thick and our wounds deep
stuck in a peculiar land with hunger and parched lips
we were friends at first, allies and positive
but the truth is, we are survivors
always have been, always will be
deceived each other but worst of all, we lied to ourselves
we gambled and hesitated; froze and contemplated

most of our mistakes cannot be undone
most of our mistakes cannot be erased
if only we had at first done what was best
gotten rid of contemplations, of complications
the moment it spurned in our stomachs
however, we spoke nothing of such
belied the danger, forsook our hunger

it was quite tragic really; after all, how could we...
after all, how could we attest...how could we...
complications? those were lives...they breathed...they...they...they...
they were weak, vulnerable, dependable...honourable?
honourable?...ha! honourable, how laughable
we've strayed from the point, wouldn't you agree?
there is no time to dwell
dwell? how could you talk like those lives were nonsense, burdensome
THERE IS NO TIME TO GRIEVE! TO MOURN...there is no—sniffles

as you can see, kindness has departed us all
as you can see, the struggles are piling and the guilt heart shattering
as you can see, there is no remedy, no remorse, no joy
we've all changed for the worst
and we are in deep sorrows for it
if only we had not lied, lied, lied, lied, lied...why did we lie?

as you can see, we are all broken, liars—we are broken liars
redeem...redeemed...unredeemed...unredeemed...unforgiven... forgive
that is, that is, that is no more
that could be no more achieved
we all all broken, liars...we are broken liars
we are, we are, we are no more
we could be, we could be no more achieved

we gambled and hesitated, froze and contemplated
most of our mistakes cannot be undone
most of our crimes cannot be erased
but the truth is, we are survivors
always have been, always will be
misunderstood and corrupt, we fought and stabbed
the blood thick and our wounds run deep

About this poem

SPURN is about a bunch of strangers marooned on a barren island who backstabbed each other for survival. When found, the original number had dwindled and they were down a few; these last survivors reflected on how cannibalistic, selfish and ruthless they acted—guilt, in short.
