o my mother

CHISA SOLOMON 1982 (Ahoada, Rivers State)

O my mother, do not let me stray
I know I can be stubborn, refusing your every command
Father had in your custody entrusted my life
I have undermined your care and attention,
Stray I don’t want to.

O my mother, shield me from crooked friends
Friends that will make my feet run into evil
I know that you could see them seated
But I couldn’t even at the top of the mountain,
Do not let me stray.

O my mother; rebuke, reprimand and guide me aright
Don’t ever make me feel comfortable at wrongs
I am helpless, my childhood and youth like smoke becloud my mind,
Yet, do not let me stray

O my mother, don’t ever give up on me
Don’t ever get tired guiding me aright even when I get tired of myself
Let me hear your still gentle whisper;
My child, I know you can do it,
O my mother, do not let me stray.
