Look to the Heavens

the church is their prison
and the bible their gun,
fear is their chains
it keeps us bound.

look to the heavens
and pray they say,

while their long arm
of greed rob us, fondle
our mother and daughters
while killing
our fathers, brothers and sons.

look to the heavens and pray
they say.

they are living the fat life
from our blood sweat and tears,
increasing their possessions and wealth
then telling us to be content
with the scraps off their tables.

look to the heavens and pray
for tomorrow will be a brighter day.

look to the heavens and pray
they say, for our reward
is in heaven.

About this poem

Religion can be an effective tool for providing order and meaning in our lives, but it can also be a source of deception. The poem explores how we are deceived by appearances, by what we are told is true, and by the promises made by religious leaders.
