Villanelle for the brokenhearted

It’s too sad to be a-doing nothing,
When the river of time keeps a-flowing on.
The broken heart should look up to a li’l something.

Treasures, if be lost, may be found again;
The dank, hurting heart must go a-ploughing on.
It’s too sad to be a-doing nothing.

Let your jukebox trill ‘bout most anything,
Even if the switch’s a bit off ‘n’ on.
The broken heart should look up to a li’l something.

Shine your soulful gems to a spick ‘n’ sparkling;
Expressly, as the grand show of life is on.
It’s too sad to be a-doing nothing.

But if tears be the traveler’s plaything;
Plug that leaking canoe an’ get a-rowing on.
The broken heart should look up to a li’l something.

Keep a-twanging hope’s taut aching bowstring,
The twilight archer shall soon arrow a glowing dawn.
It’s too sad to be a-doing nothing.
The broken heart should look up to a li’l something.

About this poem

Pain of loss or betrayal or even guilt can be brutal. But don’t let’s compound it by drifting deep into dark, lonely caves where our well-wishers cannot reach us. Stay accessible, dear heart. Allow the joy of love to flow back into life. Revive that zing. (Do what you got to do, angel. You are worth it!)
