Heartbroken. Alone.

Kardica Smith 2006 (St.Ann's Bay hospital)

I'm just like a lone tree, stuck in the cold, dark night. I cry for the warmth of someone's light. Yearning to be found out in the open; with it all going away too soon. Every day I die a little more each day. Hoping that this is just another bad dream from which one can never wake up from . . . forever restless and alone in my own world of sorrow and loneliness where no one can ever find me. This is what death feels like — my life has been stripped away with every tear that falls for eternity when there is no longer hope or light to guide anyone home to me again . . . forever alone . . .

About this poem

The "Heartbroken. Alone." poem expresses the universal feeling of loneliness that people feel in times of loss. I think this poem is very profound and powerful because it actually brings to light the emotions that we all need to feel as a way to stay connected with others and most importantly be comforted by our loved ones when they are hurting or going through a difficult situation. The first sentence in this poem is very descriptive of how she feels inside, describing how she is like a lone tree stuck in the cold, dark night. She feels like she can never be found out there, in her world of sorrow and loneliness, where no one can ever find her again.
