Have You Checked Your Bellybutton

Lyndsai N Lopez 1981 (Louisiana)

Have you checked your bellybutton?
Before your eyes cast daggers in judgment
Have you checked your bellybutton?
Before your ears listen just to repeat what you heard
Have you checked your bellybutton?
Before your mouth speaks words it shouldn't
Have you checked your bellybutton?
Is it clean?
Is it free debris?
Have you checked your bellybutton?
Is it full of dirt?
Are the crevices and cracks clear?
Have you checked your bellybutton?
Such a simple part of the body
Yet overlooked so often
Have you checked your bellybutton?
Often forgotten
Often just seen as the stomach
Have you checked your bellybutton?
Before eyes shoot daggers
And ears misunderstand words
Have you checked your bellybutton?
Before words speak ignorance and hurt
Have you checked your bellybutton?
If not then perhaps you should
If it's dirty
Focus on yourself
Don't worry about others
Don't speak on what your eyes and ears don't fully understand
Check your bellybutton
If you can neglect your bellybutton
Then maybe you should be quiet
For such a simple act of cleansing
Is no different then cleansing the rest of you
Cleanse your eyes of judgment
Cleanse your ears of gossip heard
It means nothing
Cleanse your mouth of the negative you speak
Have you checked your bellybutton?
If its dirty then be silent
Sometimes when we focus on ourselves
On our own dirt
We begin to understand what we see,  hear and speak
We have no room for judgement, and gossip
Words no longer hold value if petty and untrue
Where no power resides
Have you checked you bellybutton?
Check your bellybutton
