This Paper Heart

I hold here a replica
a model of my own heart
at times it is hard to tell which is real
this heart made of paper
or the one of flesh and blood

while that may sound odd
it's true that this origami heart
cannot stand against the current of a river
the heart in my chest
cannot hold it's own when held before you

I didn't know it would be you
that the distance I chose would evicerate
so it was distance like scissors tore
paper and flesh alike
each a reflection of the other

This life without you is much akin to death
the pale rictus of the beyond
etched onto my own face
a pain more permanent as if carved in stone
and not this flimsy heart of cardboard paper

Yet that being said it's you
that tethers me to this earth
keeping myself and this material heart
here away from a new beginning
the start of a transcendental journey

The intricate lines across this heart of mine
form tesselations for all to see
an art as unique as my own poetry
of which all you've inspired
everything laid bare on the page I hold here

For you I'm esurient
craving, hungering for that I don't need gripping tightly to an idea
a hope and a dream
that has never shown signs of fruition

But now the stage is set
the fans want to see an apogee
one final climactic scene
the want me to release you
like a wild hawk once injured

Yet that's something I could never bare
to watch you soar on the wind
towards the cumulus clouds
that I might never again lay eyes upon
so I give you that paper heart that I here hold
