The Day After It Rained

The Day After It Rained

The day after it rained
On this gilded morning
Wrapped in wind and sun
Constant sorrow creates
Its own weather
Imitating something real

Behind the sky
My wounded heart beating
As fragile as it is resilient
A thousand wings flutter
Undertones beneath the chords
The resonance of existence

Bring these bones to life
With every evaporating instant
Blurring the lines
Dividing past and present
These landscapes grow emptier
And quieter each passing year

Afraid of a holy fear
Searching for fullness
My sense of things may shift
With the telling of the story
The connection I felt standing
Underneath the trees

Wanting to communicate
With delicious accuracy
And a purposeful perspective
Time bends and doubles back
It may exist elsewhere
I have mourned and mused

And all this distillation of loveliness
Conceals something of little worth
The golden sun has a fading patina
As I wait for the rebirth of wonder
Understanding that even
The dust is sacred

About this poem

This poem was written on New Year’s Eve. It is a reflection on life, love, loss and the sorrow that I experienced during the first year of the pandemic. The phrase “rebirth of wonder” was a nod to Lawrence Ferlinghetti’s poem, I Am Waiting.
