Only a woman
Anger blazed in his eyes like wild fire
Veins in his arms tighten to show frustration
His emotions running wild
Tossing and plunging her like an object of mockery.
There he goes swinging his hands at her
Oh how he finds pleasure seeing her begging
She begs between sobs, sobs of pain, regret, and hatred. She cannot find comfort in him no longer.
For out of cruelty and malice he was crafted
Mischief and violence makes him merry
The more merrier he become upon hearing screams of his victim. There was no mercy in his eyes, for his blood screamed for violence
Lest he forget, his victim is the woman that gave him love, priceless love when he was in despair.
Yet the society judge her for being selfish and unkind
Judging her like she's nothing
For his inhumane actions she was condemned
Society blamed her for being disrespectful
How long will she suffer from this injustice?
But I forget. She's only a woman. A woman in a male dominated society.
She is voiceless!
Longing for an end to violence.
Alas, just like a bird in the cage longing to be free.
Freedom is her only desire
But lest you forget
She's only a woman with dreams of freedom from violence
Oh she's only a woman
Yes only a woman with a dream to be free.
About this poem
This poem is about violence inflicted upon woman in a patrilineal society. In a male dominated society, the woman are often referred to as inferiors and must submit inorder to be treated with little respect. Women and girls are continuously suffering from gender based violence when they intend to stand up for themselves and differentiate from what is wrong and right. Nevertheless, women and girls tend to suffer from gender based violence (GBV) in a patrilineal society and third world countries. GBV continues as women and girls are fighting for their freedom, thus, this poem is about the victims of Domestic Violence. more »
