Upstairs.
Mark Broughton. 2022 (Moston)
The girl that I love, she lies sleeping upstairs.
She asks nothing of me but to join her there.
Some sign of affection, or token of warmth
for a willing companion to face any storm.
The girl that I love, she lies sleeping upstairs.
She's shown me so often how much that she cares.
She'd console me and hold me if only I'd let her,
and ask me what's wrong and hope I'd feel better.
The girl that I love, she lies sleeping upstairs.
She must tire of this life and her partner not there.
This absentee partner, this shell of a man.
Joyless and worthless, a future unplanned.
The girl that I love, she lies, sleeping upstairs.
She may be dreaming of laughter with someone to share.
She may dream of a future unfettered by gloom.
Her dreams may die if I walk in that room.
