Jesus

Richard Groff 1957 (Pottstown, Pa.)

Father, today is my birthday
Today I turned sixty-four
I know you don’t need me. Yet you still feed me
You lift me up off the floor

You told me to eat what I’m given
To fill my belly with the scroll
So, I ate it up, it was so sweet!
I ate till I thought I’d explode

Now bring in the cake for the party
Light the candles and let them burn
Then we’ll sing a song, but you can’t sing along
And I won’t blow them out until you turn

Turn to me now sweetheart
And I won’t let you fall
We’ll play by the lake and eat our cake
Then I’ll come to get you all
