Beyond My Window

Beyond my window
Beyond the graves
Of the light and love
A person saves
In trunks; on shelves...and all around
I watch a life, without a sound.

Maybe I'll crack the door today
Letting out some ghosts...
Letting others stay.
Let in fresh air...and maybe a ray
Of light

Worn paths around my old oak tree
A chattering squirrel makes fun of me
I'll venture beyond my door and see
What lies beyond
My window

I'm assaulted by life from every direction
The sight of a bee, with a pollen erection
I'll dare to walk beyond the trees
Take a whiff of life, in the morning breeze

And just beyond that morning breeze
Just beyond the clustered trees
Just beyond the little bees
I see the river.

I can't make it quite that far
I'll put this memory in a jar.
Store it on a dusty shelf, with all the other jars called 'self'.

Maybe next winter will be better
Less fear, less politics, more love...just better.
Through my window I feel the calm
More ghosts gather...we feel the calm.

About this poem

Sometimes a person becomes entrapped in their own solitary world of grief, fear and aging.

Sometimes the words flow like a murder of crows. They've held my secrets for the past 65-years. And sometimes they repeat them back to me, and laugh. more…
