We have suffered enough

In a world of masks
Please wear just the one not two
We have suffered enough,
~
I'm smiling it's true
You could never see it then
When I wore no mask,
~
If I don't ask you
Please nurture me when I don't
Don't ask when I leave,
~
We have suffered enough
Maybe more despite each other
It's pain we cling to,
~
When I wore no mask
Our lips didn't touch as often
Risking death every time
~
Don't ask when I leave
You predict and I'm certain
That this too shall pass

About this poem

This poem delves into the depths of a failing relationship at the height of Covid. Like most relationships, this poem is constructed of six short sprints (haikus) and are a metaphor for the subject they describe. The last line of the first 3 haikus are used to create the last 3 haikus as an ode to the fact that most often it's the little things that we ignore early in relationships that eventually become the reason for ending them.
