words

your words, the constant things you say and do
to make me believe i’m lesser than you
i try my hardest to make you see that i’m the same
as you and your words can’t affect me
but certain words, they do
certain words turn into lonely nights
and streams of tears, losing sight
looking in a mirror has turned into a painful thing
saying words like “stupid” “ugly” and “disgusting”
the only time i feel secure is when i’m home
away from you, away and alone
i play it off and act like i don’t care but
in my heart, i know i’m not treated fair
i can’t change even if i wanted to, i was just
born this way
and those snide comments still linger
at the end of the day
words that seem so simple to you
are passionate and angry and certainly untrue
how can one understand what you do
when they don’t know me, haven’t walked in my shoes
feeling excluded is not the same as feeling different
i promise, it’s not hard to be considerate
i can’t be orange, red, pink, only blue
but words hurt me and words will hurt you too
