Nishat
If thou should ever come to Nishat,
stop not to look , for the Gateway Art.
The magnificent entrance , gallery of yore,
is marking the garden not anymore.
The arch and dome of the magic edifice,
the breeze of Dal does no more kiss.
The noble lawns terrace above terrace,
and fountains numerous , in stone case,
lament on the loss of the loveable face,
of the comely garden , of joy and grace.
The flowers of Nishat, to perceive fail,
the harm irreparable , to Mehjoor’s dale.
How a prejudiced leader , in democracy,
could pull down a structure of efficacy;
For it was raised , by someone great
who did not suit the leader’s state.
If thou should ever come to Nishat,
stop not to look , for the Gateway Art.
About this poem
Nishat is a beautiful Mughal garden laid in Kahmir(India). It’s beautifully designed gateway was constructed during the Sikh rule , which was dismantled by the Sheikh Abdulah regime on the plea that it wasn’t an architecture of the Mughals who had laid the garden . Dal used in the poem is for Dal lake while Mehjoor is the reputed kashmiri poet .——A glaring case of political vendetta.
