words

Sam Fitzpatrick 2007 (Cincinnati)

They might take your clothes
Your happiness and your hope
Beat you down to your weakest state
The stage crumbling in the middle of the play
Grasping for the untouchable thoughts of your mind
Trickling from your lips begging for understanding

It doesn’t have to rhyme
Or be a galvanizing statement
The pen is all yours
Take it without hesitation
Poe and Shakespeare had their time
Your words will never be mine

The words we choose
Mean more than we all do
Meanings buried in metaphors
Writing isn’t a chore
My heart fleeting
my words not retreating
