Student Driver

Richard Groff 1957 (Pottstown, Pa.)

You’ll have to get in the turning lane
To move in the right direction
To put away all of your evil deeds
And all of your insurrection

You’ll have to go where the righteous go
And move like the faithful and just
To avoid getting trapped by all of your sins
And destroyed by your wealth and your lust

If you’re driving your car on a slick mountain road
With plenty of curves, without vision
Then you’re closing your eyes to the danger ahead
So you won’t have to make a decision

When you’ve gotten so close to the edge of the road
That you almost drove off of the cliff
Then I hope that in awe with a reverent fear
That you’ll finally accept His free gift
