Welcome to Society
Welcome to society,
We hope you enjoy your stay,
And please feel free to be yourself,
As long as it's in the right way,
Make sure you love your body,
Not too much or we'll tear you down,
We'll bully you for smiling,
And then wonder why you frown,
We'll tell you that you're worthless,
That you shouldn't make a sound,
And then cry with all the others,
As you're buried in the ground,
You can fall in love with anyone,
As long as it's who we choose,
And we'll let you have your opinions,
But please shape them to our views,
Welcome to society,
We promise that we won't deceive,
And one more rule now that you're here,
There's no way you can leave.
About this poem
The purpose of this poem is to get the reader to question some of the societal norms we just accept. We are so hung up on expressing ourselves and being original but we can be out cast for having certain views. You can be yourself, but only to a certain extent. The unspoken rules of society are very contradictory. Society gives us the perception of freedom and open self-expression but really if you say the wrong thing you can be out cast. The emotion the writer is trying to communicate is realisation, realisation that these unspoken rules are very twisted. The structure of this poem is simple but very effective. A line of the promised appealing freedom, followed by the fine print, the harsh reality. The language used in this poem is simple but effectively conveys the message. This poem is very simple but very effective and doesn't feature any similes, metaphors, personification etc. This poem has a steady rhythm and flawless rhyming pattern, which makes it easy and interesting to read. more »
