The Rooster

Karen Ruth Johnson 1959 (Havre de Grace, MD)

We always had chickens and roosters around;
Where ever we lived, they too did abound.
While fixing the hen house, one day, Daddy found;
He needed a hammer and sent me round.

Now that old rooster didn't like me running round,
He flew at my face and I fell to the ground!
He stood on my chest, like a king crowned;
And pecked at my eyes; I couldn't make a sound!

Finally, I just jumped up and found;
That old bird was chasing me around!
I ran to my Daddy and he held his ground;
He wasn't afraid of that rooster and frowned!

I never again saw that rooster around;
Dad said, "Next day he was stuffed and browned!"
To this day I still carry a scar around,
From that old rooster that strutted like a king crowned!
