Out Of Touch

shaniah williams 2003 (east chicago)

Nothing feels real right now.
I feel like I'm in a dream of behind a screen...
There's something my brain won't allow.
How do you explain reality?
I wouldn't turn to society,
But how do I heck back in?
How do I get back?
But back to where?
Over...there?
Where were you to begin with?
Everything around me is moving yet I stand still as a lion watching its prey.
Only I have no prey.
I just float through everything day by day.
Invisible.
If lions, elephants, and giraffes can walk and run for miles at a time,
Not stopping for the drop of a dime,
Traveling across the lands,
Grazing on the sands,
Why can't I?
Why can't I get up to fly?
And keep flying.
Never running out of time.
Never having to stop to catch a breath or a break.
Able to breathe in the air I take.
Able to fulfill my lungs and heart.
Able to stop and get a fresh start.
Where was she they'll ask.
She's been reborn.
Only I haven't.
She's still out of touch.
