hangman

I don’t know what to do with the love
I once had for you.
How do I repurpose this intense adoration?
These old memories?
The frames that once held pictures of us?
I can pull apart the house we built for us,
Use the wood for a fire, for a crime,
I’ll burn down myself with the lumber,
I can take our broken vows and tie a noose with it,
Braiding each word into the rope,
Loop it around my neck, right on my jugular,
And step off the chair I once sat in,
When you told me how you didn’t choose us.

I’m playing a game of hangman with your ghost,
And you refuse to complete the sentence.
The memory I have of you builds my coffin,
And my stubborn affections put me in the ground.
