Practice Gratitude

it’s not supposed to be easy, nothing is
What did you expect?
did you really think this wouldn’t hurt?
more fool you silly girl
Why didn’t you say something sooner?
lie back and think of England
this isn’t new and you’re not special
let them finger your ribcage in the dark
space behind your lungs wet like sand
cement poured where it shouldn’t be
entombing what is left of you
How many times?
you poor delicate thing
this is what we were made for
God’s greatest pleasure
spitting bile into palms
tracing indelible prints
left there for the next
And don’t forget to be grateful
you’ve had your pick of the lot
at least they they find you interesting
we can’t all be so lucky
