When a Good Man Goes to War

When a good man goes to war,
he knows NOT what lies in store.
Reluctantly, he marches on, until the battlefield he reaches,  then fights until he's won.
Now, the battle's over, his friends and foes lie dead.
Now the unfathomable begins to unfold inside his head.
As he looks round, all lies in ruin
The ashes still smoldering, as on the end of a broom.
His kind and gentile heart is now split in two,
as he sits quietly sobbing, unsure, what next to do.
The war is now over, so to his home he is sent,
his memories in tact, though his mind is now bent.
A man broken, shattered by what he has done, and has seen,
the images in his mind unable to be wiped clean.
The angst and the heartache he will keep for all his days,
and it has devastated his mind in myriad ways.
Unable to sleep as he recalls events,
that bring terror to his soul, as he ponders "What it all meant?"
Overcome by these demons he ceaselessly paces the floor,
until the day comes, when they lock him behind a door.
Labeled "NO LONGER FIT" to cope with his woes,
haunted by the ghosts of his friends and his foes.
The rest of his days alone, behind that wretched door...
THIS is what happens when a GOOD man goes to war.
