Drive By Shooting
Children used to be able to go out and play,
Without having any fears of being blown away.
But those days just don't exist anymore,
Because now our children are victims of war.
It's called Drive by Shooting that's what I said
Just a blast from a shotgun and there's one more dead.
It's not fair that our kids can't go out at night,
For fear of falling victim to a gang members fight.
Mother's left weeping deep in their tears,
While gang members make reality their fears.
A shot in the dark is frequent in L.A.,
but that still don't explain why our kids must pay.
It's called Drive By Shooting a hideous caper
making all the headlines in all the News papers
If as one we come together as we surely must,
Then I'm sure with this problem we can easily adjust.
The gangs running around like in mafia times,
Trying to act like Al Capone or Bonnie and Clyde.
But these turns of events we simply cannot ignore,
or the next victim might be the kid next door.
And if you don't believe it's coming to the neighborhood soon,
Then go and check out the bodies in the Coroner's room.
Now this line I write, it will be my last,
It's just a tribute from me to the kids that have passed.
About this poem
This poem was written by me in 1987 during the Gang street wars in Los Angeles in response to the senseless ways gang members used to punish each other. This was done by what police dubbed was "Drive by Shooting". Unfortunately many children died by stray bullets. This poem is a eulogy for those lost victims.
