the garden shrank at night

Calvin van Hetten 1997 (paramaribo)

The garden shrank at night
Luminescent bugs glowed
Bright beneath broken bows,
Trees hung low
Grabbing at air,
The creatures crawled cautiously below.
Strap in, sweet contagion,
Strike me down
With fury and impulse.
Stronger men
Have tried to explain
The world around me
Stronger men
Have carried the weight
Of a more present sense of existence
But none of them
Have existed in my life,
None of them
Have made my decisions for me.
