How can this be?

The words you said to me
Didn’t realise you were hurting me
It’s me who feels the fool
Because I stood close and all I could do
Is let you walk away but
I tried my best to make you stay
Fighting a battle I cannot win
Crying as if it’s a horrific sin
But I knew this was coming
I knew it from the start
And while everything is still numbing
I know I’ve done my part
The words you said to me
Are now not hurting me
