Heroic: part 1

A hero came from across the sea from a life of leisure
he searched for adventure, fame and treasure.
The hero cared not for his teachers lesson
He said he’ll do fine with a good head and reason.

The hero met the folk from a poor land
Heard their problems and took them in hand.
The hero claimed "taxes were too high,
if the king needs that much then why?"

Those who could not pay enough
Were made to do hard labour stuff
They worked hard and rations were small
The feudal lords counted them all.

At the age of twenty every boy was conscripted
For 5 years, on that the crown insisted
The young, middle aged and retired
Were all that a farm required.

To every discomfort he bought their attention
Riling them up to eventual insurrection
With crude weapons in hand
The hero formed a warband.

For freedom he pitted father against son
Uncle to nephew till the day was done
To spite the unthinkable cost
The hero proclaimed TYRANT had lost.

With no one to claim their crop
They ate with no reason to stop
The hero left the folk with their freedom
And no thought to who will feed them.

When the first winter rain came and brought cold
All that could chop wood were very young and old.
As the frostbite settled and hunger pain came
there was no sign of a wagon with royal grain.

With no public service, the levy was incomplete,
houses and field were lost to the first of Spring sleet.
And when the mountain passes began to thaw
Raiders came, there were no soldiers to enforce the law.

Years later, when the hero tired of his roam
With his tales he returned to his home
He never knew that a poor land on another shore
Disappeared one day and heard of no more.
