HUNT AND RUN
In the game of life and death
Great reptiles lying on the plains,
Heartened by the new day sun;
Begin to stir, their bulk to heft
As moving slowly once again,
Their day has only just begun;
In a land of joy bereft
Amid the bones of ancient slain,
Skilled killers hunt and run!
In a land where killers roam
Where nothing dares to take a breath,
Foul corpses of the newly slain;
Reveal leviathans in their home
Great monsters bringing sudden death
To coat the fields in crimson stains;
Weeping humans doth bemoan
Their hopes and dreams cruelly cleft;
Within this foul land, they must remain.
Foul creatures of a primordial kind
Lumber slowly through this evil land,
Hunting any beast they sight;
Evil ‘nough to break the mind
Of the staunchest, stoutest man,
Even warriors bred to fight;
Serpentine beasts slowly unwind
Revealing stunted legs to stand,
To set out hunting through the night.
Through the forest, night fiends slink
Hunting beasts on which to feed,
Stalking until the morning sun;
Then as their hooded lids doth blink
Obeying dark primaeval need
They hide until the day is done;
Then obeying ancient instinct
They return, making humans plead;
As skilled killers hunt and run!
