Politics

Michael Matalon 1973 (New York)

We listen to the politicians
Who seem more like magicians
That pull answers out from a hat

They stir up our inner feelings
With claims of future dealings
Of this, that is better than that

Yet we fall within their trap
By means of thier generous rap,
Then stand firm with our new beliefs!

Are we truly such dense creatures
To value such pointless features
Delivered by proven liars and thieves?

Certain we are
Because we do
It seems pointless
What we hold true

About this poem

I wrote this many years ago, before the recent political craziness, which means politics has always been crazy.

Right now, we lack positive leadership in the world but we should remember past leaders that were very good ! They were not perfect but left their mark for the better. May I mention, Churchill, Thatcher of England, Mandela of South Africa,
Reagan, FDR, JFK, Truman of the USA.
In my city we have had the same mayor for over 30 years, no one can beat him
because of his fair politics !
You can't paint them all with the same paint !

      - all politicians are motivated by votes & deploy the same tactics to solicit voters.

it’s the nature of politics…. Neither side is right, both sides play dirty, so the system prevents long terms and applies constant voting to keep the balance.

Nothing new under the sun, yet it still manages to surprise us.

The poet describes the frustration that lives among most voters. Politicians should represent people, not their own interests.

actually my frustration is with the voter, who believes everything they hear & has selective memory

A poem with a message for all who follow politicians that just serve their own interests. I forgive you the typo 'thier' (their).
