Last Memory With Grandma

My last memory of us will be made in this room
As I listen to your breaths, I know it will be soon
As I sit here and watch you slowly fade away
I think back before you became old and grey.
Back in the days when my parents were a bit wild
You took me in and raised me like I was your own child

All the times that you kissed me goodnight
Followed with mornings when my socks caused a fight.
Oh the fits and the tantrums that I would throw
If the seams on my socks were touching my big toe.
But you would still get up and get me ready for the bus
Knowing that I would be grumpy and make a big fuss.

The time I smiled when you spanked me with the fly swatter
You said“We must be too big for this end? Eh Granddaughter”
So you turned it around and I started to freak out
My smile went away and I began to hold my butt and pout.
It was that day that I learned not to disrespect
Because you would sure put me back in check

The time I burned myself with the car lighter
I pushed it in and it popped back out brighter
I had to touch it to see what it would do
I came crying and running straight to you
You broke off some aloe and put it on my burn
You comforted me first then asked what did I learn

When you would sit at the table and watch a show
I would get beside you and play with your elbow
The skin was so loose and I would pinch and roll it around
It would comfort me so much that I wouldn’t make a sound
Some people would be annoyed and get real snappy
But you didn’t mind as long as it made me happy

The way you treated others showed your golden heart
You never lost your composure when most would fall apart
You have such a strong will and a very skillful mind
I don’t know how you did it all of the time
No matter what struggle we faced, you always got us through.
I was blessed to be raised by such a great woman like you.
