Outback

Five dreary days of thundering
Along a rough, red dirt track
Past a shimmering, crystallised pool
Through an abandoned desert
Ignoring another disturbance to its peaceful slumber

The low rumble of the engine becomes weaker and weaker as the hours go by,
As the journey continues.

The fiery sunset explodes
Setting the whole world alight.
Illuminating the dancing trees,
The waving bushes,
Only for them to disappear in a dust storm

Sometimes the moon comes to say hello,
And gives the animated plants a rest.
When the distant lights and hushed murmurs
Signify the day is over

And another one arrives, bringing nothing but familiar
With a harsh, sudden dread
That the journey will never end

Until, at last, a new sight is seen
Past the misty, murky river
And the dry plains
The tall, dead gums
The big, stiff bushes

Home.
