School Day Mornings

I can hear my mother calling
up the stairs impatiently,
she is trying hard to coax me
out of bed, with toast and tea,
but you see, this is a morning
that I'm meant to go to school,
and I don't quite understand why
It's the hardest morn of all...
to get up bright and early,
with a smile upon my face,
and thank the sun for waking me
with such panache and grace.
So i don't! I hold my pillow
pressed down over my ears and try..
to pretend i haven't heard
my mothers desperate cry.
"You're going to be late my boy,
you simply have to rush!
you need to comb your hair my dear
and your teeth they need a brush".
I lay in bed quite motionless
pretending I'm asleep,
how much longer can i stay here
before I'm in trouble deep?
Eventually I drag myself
out of my cozy bed,
"I'm coming" I call out to Mum,
"Heard that before" She said.
So I'm up, I use the bathroom
and stuff my breakfast fast,
and give my mum a little kiss
as i run quickly past.
I bound out of the front door
and meet up with my mates,
we can hear the school bell ringing
as we fly in through the gates.
So i made it! only just,
but the thing I find so cruel,
is that I only feel so tired
on the mornings I have school.
For if it were a Saturday
they'd really be no fuss,
because (for some strange reason,
that i really can not suss)
I wake up before anyone,
with a smile all white and pearly,
and then my mothers shouting,
"Back to bed, its far too early"!

About this poem

I often use poetry as a vent for emotions felt..........This was one of those times! I wrote this poem from the point of view of my son, in an attempt to understand how he might be feeling.
