GREEN MAN

JP. 1948 (United Kingdom)

GREEN MAN

As green man sat to ponder his fate
He felt the suns heat burn his skin
This end he could not contemplate
As the atmosphere kept all heat in

They stopped using cars a long while ago
Before fossil fuel ran out the reserves
The oil and coal are still down below
And the resources are conserved

The landfill sites are all full to the top
And the rivers were cleaner than now
So why has pollution refused to stop?
Why does concrete break up the plough?

Why do the floods still sweep away?
What we build upon the plain
And why is the sun so hot today?
Do those clouds hold the acid rain?

The waters still rise in a greenhouse effect
As the polar icecaps melt
And less are the measures that man can select
To save forests and African veldt

As the rubbish tips rise there is no compromise
But to conserve what little is left
Recycle the answer to reutilize
Whilst caught by the stick that is cleft

Yet still no one listens to a prophet of doom
As man sinks to the mire of despair
And it will be that way unless we act soon
By adopting some interest and care

Still it won’t be the end something always survives
At least man can put faith in that
But man drowned by the discard of busier lives
Has just one benefactor The Rat.
