Trick or Treat

Just now, there is a stranger in my bed
Blue eyes, white skin and straight flowing hair
Blowing in the wind of my standing fan
I did not hear my kinky-haired wife make her exit
I did not see my olive-skinned baby leave
But this stranger in her place is as comfy as our black cat
Curled up in our bed at will – My wife’s and mine
Her gaze so deep, so uncomfortably familiar
Her smile so slight with its gentle lift
Possessing my soul and reading my thoughts
In her foreign casing, so disconcerting
But her callaloo birthmark is on the very same spot
This mysterious witch who pulls at my heart!

About this poem

As beauty technology evolves, women are able to transform themselves to the point that they are almost unrecognizable to those around them, including their loved ones. This poem explores the impact of one such transformation.
