Words' Lives Matter
John Jessup Kennan 1953 (Pomona)
Your story of the story being fake
Of who you think I think you are
Being whatever you think you are is fake
A fictitious wish on a phony star
There's no story here of you at all
Smoke and mirrors, hocus pocus
Flick of the wrist, slight sleight of hand
Designs a crafty fractured focus
And isn't it just like you
To think it's all about you
To make it all about you
When it never was about you?
Now I'm banned from conversation
The genitalia isn't right
You burn my books, you pluck my tongue
From the loftiest of heights
So saddle up your wild angels
Flog them with your riding crop
But remember as you mount them
It's a long drop from the top
And isn't it just like you
To think it's all about you
To make it all about you
When it never was about you?
You tell the world it held you down
You were never given a choice
You tell the world it muzzled you
You had to fight to find your voice
But I really gotta wonder
How much of that is really true
You haven't shut up in decades
And all you talk about is you
And isn't it just like you
To think it's all about you
To make it all about you
When it never was about you?
Your story is I'm filled with fear
But of what you cannot say
You assign me motives and emotions
Somehow you serve yourself that way?
If the dead will truly tell no tales
You're the exception to the rule
We'll just wait for you to stop your yapping
So we can bury you
And isn't it just like you
To think it's all about you
To make it all about you
When it never was about you?
