Ships
Bob Vavilis 1963 (Chios)
I gaze in awe at the ships moored on the harbor—
and daydream of journeys … lands voyagers have seen—
the whipping of Aeolus’* winds on the sails—
Poseidon’s calm and treacherous seas;
I have a home and dear ones that love me,
yet my spirit craves for open seas;
voyages teemed with challenges and struggles,
and never-ending odysseys.
Embrace me tightly, kiss me long, walk with me to the shore…
Enter my mind, see through my eyes, exhilarate my soul.
Tell me that you’ll pray to your god to watch carefully over me;
light a candle, whisper to me … ask the winds to blow your thoughts to me.
And when my heart and mind have won—conquering fears and hopes…
I’ll fight my way back—sail home to you—construct our wonderland.
We’ll forge our experiences, fears, and dreams, into a renewed form of life;
and if we grow languid and restless from the mundane—
we’ll walk hand-in-hand toward the harbor’s ships.
