Analysis of melted ice cubes

Tonight is hot
sticky hot
the smoke from my cigarette
rises to the light
and looms
like the fog of early morning
I peek out the blinds
like a recluse
and watch
the girls across the street
smoke
and talk
their laughter like music
taunting every man for miles
I start to remember
those hot summer nights
in her room
our laughter
like cool washcloths
to our fevered heads
our hearts
as full as the ashtrays
beside her bed
our bodies
sliding off one another
with sweat
love
was the ice cubes
clinging together in the glass
that kept us cool
on those hot summer nights
that now taunt me
like the laughter
of the girls
across the stree
