Analysis of I was the statue

I was the statue, made of stone
So sure of what I was
Seemingly strong and indestructible
Able to withstand anything
The droppings from the birds,my only concern

I used to welcome the rain
Falling so soft and cool
Drizzling down from the heavens
Washing away the filth of the day
Whatever the birds brought, I was unafraid
Because I knew that soon, there would be rain

The rain always comes
Washing away the filth of the day
Birds come and go, dropping their droppings
But the rain, the rain always comes
Always falling down on me
Even cleansing, when I'm already clean

It was too long before I realized my folly
Embracing the rain, to wash it all away
What I failed to notice, or could not see
What the rain was really washing away was me
Slowly chipping away at my form
Disguising destruction in an act of caring

The rain always comes
Drizzling down from the heavens
Eroding me slowly, drop after drop
Washing away the filth of the day
But taking a little bit of me every time
Slowly erasing, what was once there

Hammer and chisel, the rain still falls
Devouring me softly, drop after drop
Eating away at my form
But leaving me here to await the next storm
The deathblow never comes, and it never will
Just the laughter of the rain, as it smooths me away

I am now but a boulder, all features washed away
Just a hunk of stone, left in the rain
Everything that made me me, washed away
Disappearing into myself, lost in plain sight
Although I am still here
I AM NO LONGER ME

I was the statue made of stone
So sure of what I was
Now I am featureless, I have no form
All distinguishing features smoothed away
And still comes the rain
To wash away all that I am

G.Jason Cox

I'm not as gloomy as my poems. I've just had some hardships in my life, and I write down my feelings as they are at the time. I make no claim that I am a good (or even decent) poet, but writing them helps me be 'normal' in my day to day life. more…
