Analysis of Chanson de Gavroche

Victor Marie Hugo 1802 (Besançon) – 1885 (Paris)

Monsieur Prudhomme est un veau
Qui s'enrhume du cerveau
Au moindre vent frais qui souffle.
Prudhomme, c'est la pantoufle
Qu'un roi met sous ses talons
Pour marcher à reculons.

Je fais la chansonnette,
Faites le rigodon.
Ramponneau, Ramponnette, don !
Ramponneau, Ramponnette !

Ce Prudhomme est un grimaud
Qui prend sa pendule au mot
Chaque fois qu'elle retarde.
Il contresigne en bâtarde
Coups d'état, décrets, traités,
Et toutes les lâchetés.

Je fais la chansonnette,
Faites le rigodon.
Ramponneau, Ramponnette, don !
Ramponneau, Ramponnette !

Il enseigne à ses marmots
Comment on rit de nos maux ;
Pour lui, le peuple et la France,
La liberté, l'espérance,
L'homme et Dieu, sont au-dessous
D'une pièce de cent sous.

Je fais la chansonnette,
Faites le rigodon.
Ramponneau, Ramponnette, don !
Ramponneau, Ramponnette !

Le Prudhomme a des regrets ;
Il pleure sur le progrès,
Sur ses loyers qu'on effleure,
Sur les rois, fiacres à l'heure,
Sur sa caisse, et sur la fin
Du monde où l'on avait faim.

Je fais la chansonnette,
Faites le rigodon.
Ramponneau, Ramponnette, don !
Ramponneau, Ramponnette !

Victor Marie Hugo

Victor Marie Hugo was a French poet, novelist, and dramatist of the Romantic movement. He is considered one of the greatest and best known French writers. In France, Hugo's literary fame comes first from his poetry but also rests upon his novels and his dramatic achievements. Among many volumes of poetry, Les Contemplations and La Légende des siècles stand particularly high in critical esteem. Outside France, his best-known works are the novels Les Misérables, 1862, and Notre-Dame de Paris, 1831. Though a committed royalist when he was young, Hugo's views changed as the decades passed; he became a passionate supporter of republicanism, and his work touches upon most of the political and social issues and artistic trends of his time. He was buried in the Panthéon. more…
