Analysis of Nocturne

Maurice Rollinat 1846 (Châteauroux) – 1903 (Ivry-sur-Seine)

L’aboîment des chiens dans la nuit
Fait songer les âmes qui pleurent,
Qui frissonnent et qui se meurent,
À bout de souffrance et d’ennui.

Ils ne comprennent pas ce bruit,
Ceux-là que les chagrins effleurent !
L’aboîment des chiens dans la nuit
Fait songer les âmes qui pleurent.

Mais, hélas ! quand l’espoir s’enfuit,
Et que, seuls, les regrets demeurent,
Quand tous les sentiments nous leurrent,
Alors on écoute et l’on suit
L’aboîment des chiens dans la nuit.
