Analysis of Les Vierges

Maurice Rollinat 1846 (Châteauroux) – 1903 (Ivry-sur-Seine)

Le cœur des vierges de vingt ans
Est inquiet comme la feuille,
Et tout leur corps aspire et cueille
Les confidences du Printemps.

Le jour, aux parfums excitants
Du lilas et du chèvrefeuille,
Le cœur des vierges de vingt ans
Est inquiet comme la feuille.

Le soir, sur le bord des étangs,
Chacune rôde et se recueille,
Et leur secret que l'ombre accueille
Fait sourire ou pleurer longtemps
Le cœur des vierges de vingt ans.
