Analysis of Les Glas

Maurice Rollinat 1846 (Châteauroux) – 1903 (Ivry-sur-Seine)

Chaque jour dans la basilique
Ils pleurent pour de nouveaux morts,
Lancinants comme des remords
Avec leur son mélancolique.

C’est l’appel grave et symbolique
Que j’entends au gîte et dehors.
Avec ton sanglot métallique,
Vieux bourdon, comme tu me mords !

Hélas ! mon âme est destinée,
Quand l’horrible glas retentit,
À grincer comme une damnée,
Car c’est la voix qui m’avertit

Que bientôt le train mortuaire
M’emportera comme un colis,
Et que pour le dernier des lits
Je dois préparer mon suaire.
